Thanks to the efforts of the writer’s sister Maria Pavlovna everything was preserved here the way it was on May 1, 1904 when Chekhov left Yalta. In 1921 Chekhov’s house was declared to become a museum and the writer’s sister Maria Pavlovna who constantly stayed with him was appointed a lifelong house-keeper. Maria Chekhova was the Museum director for 36 years till the last moment of her life (May 15, 1957).

The house features well-preserved writer’s dining-room, bedroom, study. One of the rooms houses a historical-literary display dedicated to the writer’s life and creative activity.

This house eye witnessed Shalyapin’s singing, Sergey Rakhmaninov’s and Alexander Spendiarov’s playing the piano. Constantine Stanislavsky, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, Vera Komissarzhevskaya and many outstanding representatives of the Russian culture of that time were Chekhov’s guests.

It was in this very house where Chekhov wrote “the Lady and the Lapdog”, “the Cherry Orchard”, “Three sisters”, “the Bride”, “In a Gorge” and other works.
The museum stock comprising over 13,000 items features the writer’s autograph, his books edited during his lifetime.
